AUSTIN MEMORIAL PARK CEMETERY MASTER PLAN

Austin Memorial Park Cemetery (AMPC) is a priority one project from the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department Historic Cemeteries Master Plan. The goal of the project was to develop a detailed master plan that could be priced and used for fundraising.

Using community feedback and goals outlined by the Master Plan, Studio Balcones designed a harmonious entrance to the AMPC. The design features two areas: a welcoming cemetery entrance and office, and a visitor courtyard. Sited on approximately 2 acres of the greater cemetery property, the project was developed in tandem with H+UO Architects’ restoration and redesign of existing historic buildings into improved office space and a visitor center/event space.

One goal of the site design was to accommodate and respect its three main user groups: the people making end of life arrangements and attending ceremonies; the cemetery employees; and recreational park goers. The was achieved through a sequence of outdoor multi-use areas that hold different group sizes and allow for varying amounts of privacy. A series of new walkways and parking reinforces this division, provides ADA access, incorporates best practices of sustainable parking design, and allows people to flow past spaces in use.
