Four stories above the busy UT Austin campus, the hub of student life at University House congregates on an elevated landscape designed by Studio Balcones. Constrained by requirements for the parking garage below and the finished floor elevation, the swimming pool sits above the main deck level. Studio Balcones utilized an undulating chaise-longue deck and custom steel planters in order to minimize requirements for guardrails. The chaise-longue creates a dialogue between the elevated landscape, the street level, and the Capitol view, which makes for an impressive backdrop. A bold geometric pattern animates the ground plane and defines an outdoor living room with a jumbotron and flexible seating nested between raised steel planting beds overflowing with native and drought-tolerant species.
